If you find a small pile of pellets in your home stacked together sometimes around a hole in wood or several small wings on a window sill, you may have signs of Drywood Termites. Florida has two types of termites which are Subterranean and Drywood termites. Both of these termites can cause serious damage to your home if left unchecked.
The small pile of pellets is actually refuse from termites as they eat the wood in your home. If you find several small wings without a bug, it may be from a termite as they break off their wings as they infest the wood in your home. Drywood Termites usually fly or swarm into your home. They are more prevalent near oak trees and historic frame homes. But, you can actually bring termites into your home from a piece of wood furniture at a yard sale if the owner had Drywood Termites in their home.
What do I do? As soon as you see any signs, I recommend a termite inspection of your home. If the inspector finds signs of termites, he will recommend a treatment. Homes are usually tented to kill Drywood Termites because they are infested in your walls and difficult to reach. If you have Subterranean Termites, the treatment involves spraying poison around your foundation as Subterranean Termites return to the soil.
What could happen? I have seen serious damage over the years. In one instance, the entire door frame around double front doors was eaten mainly leaving just the door. Another instance, an attic entrance made of wood was eaten. When you touched the wood, it crumbled in your hand. Don't let this happen to you!
